Growing up in the 80s in Japan, we have one really great advantage that many people that grew up around family here don't have. We hace cassette tape recordings of us and our family back here in America. We used to send messages back and forth on 60 and 90 minute tapes. Well, yesterday I was going through a box of them. I was thinking it would be fun to listen to some of them again.
Tami and I were laughing because we felt like we were getting updated on news from 30 years ago! I was telling her about someone who had been trimming in his yard with a trimmers that had a metal blade on it and the blade had come off and hit his knee. She gasped and then I said, "Oh don't worry...it was 30 years ago and he's all better now!" We started laughing and said it would be so funny to go up to some of these people now and say, "I just heard about your knee injury..." People would think we were insane...you all reading my blog probably do think I'm insane!
Anyway, the best find of the day for me personally was a tape with a label on it that said, "Save for Baby". I put it in and found myself hearing my Dad's 30 year old voice telling my Grandparents over the phone to America that I had been born. You could hear their voices on the other side getting the news. My Mom had some serious complications after I was born and so they also sounded concerned about that. But it was so fun. My Mom and Dad let my Grandma and Grandpa name me (a Japanese tradition) and so I heard my Dad say, "so, what is her name?" and my Grandma reply, "how about Rebekah?". It was so weird but neat to actually hear this conversation 30 years later. Then later my Mom talked on the tape describing the whole labor and post deliver experience. It was so neat. I have always wanted to ask her about it since I have had my own kids and it was the most special gift to find this tape. It was definitely a moment when I felt very loved by the Lord.
Anyway, it was kind of a surreal experience to hear my parents voices at my age, talking about my birth. I'm so happy I found it and am going to try to figure out a way to get it burned to a disk so I don't lose it.
Just wanted to share~

These tapes have to be one of the coolest things I have ever heard of. I wish my my family had something like this.
Wow Bek, that is so so so cool! I am so thankful you have all these neat little experiences to keep since your mom is gone. How incredibly special. It is amazing how the Lord just knows our whole lives before they even happen...He knew when they were being recorded that you would find them...I know He was excited for you to find his special gift to you yesterday! So thankful He cares about all those sweet little things!
Love you!

What a wonderful find! I have a couple of those tapes that you'd probably enjoy hearing. Remind me to give them to you next time I see you. One of them has you telling stories to Heidi and Tami. So cute!
Love,
Aunt Pam
Oh, Beka! How I would loooove to hear her voice again. If you get that transferred to a cd, could I purchase a copy? What a gift from God. I am so happy for you girls to have this blessing. A. cindy
