Would the Heroes in the room please stand? (Rebekah, you can stay seated!). It's time to acknowledge five people in my life who were Heros when I was in distress. This story is to make sure everybody who reads this blog doesn't think I'm a perfect person who entertains and fixes waching machines. I may have saved a few bucks fixing my washing machine but I just cost us several hundred...maybe a couple thousand in the end because of an act of complete stupidity!
It happened last Thursday. I was driving to my Mother-in-law's home for an Easter party. I was driving from my sister, Heidi's house. We were listening to a CD with all of Darci's favorite songs. When she asked me to skip a song, I looked down to press skip. When I did this it didn't seem to have skipped ahead so I looked again to skip again. I'm not sure how long I had looked down but when I looked up I was about a foot away from a construction sawhorse barricade. I swerved but not soon enough...I hit two of the sawhorse barricades at full speed and i heard crunching. I just felt sick. I was able to quickly pull off the road into ice cream shop parking lot. When I got out to survey the damage, a woman walking by said, "You have TWO flat tires!" I could hear the air hissing out of the tires. The front right side of my van had white paint from the barricades. The woman said, "Were you texting? he he he....ha ha ha" I said "no...I was...trying to switch songs on my CD player" (not much better than texting). She just shook her head and walked on.
If it had been just one tire, I would probably have tried to change the tire and this could have been a triumphant blog post. But alas, two tires means it needs towing. So I called my Mother-in-law and told her I'd be late for the party.
Now to the Heroes of the day:
The first goes to Tami, my sister for coming to get me and my kids. She drove us all over to my mother-in-law's home for the party. She then let me borrow her vehicle on Monday to go to the doctor with Darci. She actually let this hair-brained lady drive her new car! What a Hero!
The next Heros: To Mom and Marie for spending the afternoon with the grouch! You can imagine I was not wearing a party hat when I arrived at the Easter party. I'm sure I was such a wet rag to be with and these two deserve the status of Hero for putting up with me.
And last but not least, my husband. You hear how when a wife will do something really dumb her husband will (rightfully) be hopping mad and it is cause for marital stress. This incident made me even more thankful for this husband of mine. When he came in after hearing the extent of the damage (it's not just two flat tires by the way), I said, "I'm sorry" and he just winked at me and smiled. Then on the way home I said sorry again and he gave me a kiss and said he forgave me. Never a lecture or a "you owe me..." or a "I can't believe what this is going to cost us!?" or a "what is WRONG with you??" ...all of which would have been perfectly legitimate statements. I experienced mercy and forgiveness...it was good timing for Easter. My Hero, thanks for loving me like Christ loves the Church. (okay, I'll stop...if he reads this, he is going to wish I would have not even mentioned him).
So, there you go folks...these were my five Heros. Thank you to each one of you for your heroic acts! This Dumbsel in distress (yes, I know it's usually damsel...but I think the new title is a better fit) is truly grateful!

I'm not swayed... I still think you're great. :)
Bek, you truly do have wonderful people in your life! I think the world of all of them and you too! -Heidi
Anyone would love to help you out because you are such a kind person! Glad no one was hurt~
what a great group of Hero's!!! And Bek...you are a wonderful person...don't be so hard on yourself:)
awww, great post & pics!
I think they are ALL worthy heros!!
It could of happened to any of us, you know ;)
Ahhh, Rebekah, You are such a jewel. You didn't tell everyone how when you called me you calmly said you were going to get 2 new tires and change them yourself. Now who is the hero? I wouldn't have even considered changing 1 tire let alone 2. You are amazing.
Dad is so used to my dumbsel in distress antics, that yours seemed perfectly normal. love you Mom
what great heros! Why is it that when we think our husbands will be SO mad at us they usually aren't! I think it is so adorable that Matt winked!! I'm a big fan of winking. What a good man! And I think that all of your heros are fabulous!!
i dare say that this small incident (and a mother ministering to her child to cause it, none the less) doesn't tarnish you at all. :)
great post! loved it! what fantastic people you have in your life!
by the way, tam-tam, you look gorgeous!
I say "Ditto" to every comment above!
oh bek...you know, i really AM glad you named me hero because i really did SOOO much for you. i mean, it's not like i had four accidents last year with even more break-down...it's not like you packed up your children every morning and drove me to work...it's not like you dropped everything you were doing at a moments notice to come help me out...and it's not like you trusted me with your vehicle and let me drive it. :) yeah, you REALLY owe me. :)
bek, i'm just glad we don't keep tallys 'cause i'd be completely lacking. thanks for always "showing up" for me in my life!
Oh no ~ That is not fun. Those things can so easily happen.
Isn't is great to have loved ones around to help us in situations such as this!?! I know you are a hero to those in your life and are just as willing to help them out.
I feel for you! Trust me, that could happen to any busy mom. I am glad that no one was hurt. It stinks that this happened with your nice, new van, not the old one - isn't that how it goes! :-)
Oh Bekah!! I love this post! I love you!
