What do you do when you are nearly 37 weeks pregnant, dialated 2 cm, 60% effaced, and have a weekend getaway planned (that happens to be 3 hours away)? That is the dilemma I'm facing right now. I really want to go this weekend...we have made an annual trip with Matt's cousins on the Hoffmann side to MIchigan City, IN and it's always so much fun. We already have our babysitter lined up and even have my food made and in the freezer for the weekend. But, I have been having Braxton Hicks contractions for the past couple months. I called my doctor and his nurse said, that since I am having the BH contractions, she doesn't think it's wise to go that far away. But I did have the same thing with Darci and she didn't come early.
Any advice? Should I listen to my nurse's advice or should Matt and I just risk it and go?

Argg! That is a dilemma! I have to say that I always prefer to play it safe rather than sorry and I wouldn't go. The 3 hour car ride is going to be very uncomfortable! I think that it's always best to listen to your doctor. Although, if you are adventurous like Andria (read her most recent post) and don't mind delivering in another state, then I guess you should take the risk!
What about finding an alernative of something fun to do for the weekend? Maybe go on priceline and get a hotel for a good deal somewhere close, like Peoria, and just you and Matt go and enjoy one last weekend without the kids before #3 arrives. You can eat out and shop at some different places and enjoy just being together. Michael and I went to the Weekend to Remember conference in Peoria 2 weeks before I was due and we had a great time! And we were close enough to home that we felt comfortable being away.
Ahh risk it, Anna was late, it is a girl thing. I knew she would be here when the contractions started, but I had contractions for two weeks before she came. Besides if she does come while you are there, it will make for an interesting story. Let us know what you dedecide.
Does your insurance care if you travel this late in your pregnancy? Would you still be covered? Especially if a nurse/doctor advised you not to. I know some policy have certain 'rules' about traveling.
Michigan City does sound fun. I can't believe you are already 37 weeks. When I saw the little baby ticker count down thing the other day I thought it must be wrong. You look great for being 8 months pregnant. Best of luck with whatever you decide.

What a tough decision- knowing what a fun clan it is, it would be SO HARD to stay home. I don't like to miss out on fun, so I would be inclined to go, though I think Andy would most likely try to keep me home. Sara makes a good point, though- thousands of dollars (from insurance covering/not covering the birth out of state) could help make the decision easier.
Come, Come, Come! =)
As for the out-of-state dilema, we're less than an hour from IL! You could make it back =)
PLUS - we'll have a DR there ;)

I really didn't mean to post that twice! whoops!
Rebekah, if you are like your sister-in-law, you would go and make your mother-in-law very nervous :-)but it all did work out! I would go as long as the insurance would cover you and I would know where the nearest hospital was just in case!
Love ya, Jill
I would definitly go! I regret not going with Darin to Hawaii b/c we were close to being due with Will. I totally could have gone but we played it safe...I wish we would have risked it! But glad his brother and him could have some fun together...So, my vote is to GO GO GO and have a ball with all those fun people! And if you dont, can Darin and I take your spot : ) Just kidding.
Rebekah!
I was bummed to hear that you guys might not come. Honestly, thats a hard one! I am sure you and Matt will make the right choice. (We REALLY hope you are there though) No pressure of course (o:
Sarah
I know it's a little bit earlier but I was in michigan 3 out of 4 weeks my eigth month of pregnancy, including at 36 weeks (That said I wasn't having the braxton hicks contractions). I played a "don't ask, don't tell" policy with Dr. Nord. : ) I'll warn you if you go, take a pillow. You definately handle long trips differently that far along.
My inclination would be to go. It's hard for me to imagine insurance could charge you for having a baby other than where you're from (but it could be worth checking discreetly), make sure you know where a hospital is within reasonable difstance and be glad you have a doctor with you! : )
If I were in your shoes I'd be so sad if I didn't go and the baby didn't come and if she does make her appearance, what a great labor story (hence Andria like Mindy referenced!)!
have fun deciding!!!
Ummm...I guess you know how I feel about it hu? =o) As others have said, call your insurance company first and make sure you're covered. You need to call the hospital as well to cover all of your bases. Most hospitals take any insurance you've got, but make sure (just google map the zip code you're going to and type "hospital" in the business box to find the nearest one). A hospital will request your records from home if you are a new patient...so your tests and everything will be there. You can't assume you won't have the baby...you need to assume you will and if you're ok with that prospect, go for it. If the idea of delivery at a hospital you've never been to is the worst thing you've ever heard of, then I wouldn't go. It's your third though, I would say that if you did go into labor you would know pretty early on and could head home if it's only three hours-depends on how fast you deliver though and that would not be a fun drive.
If you're heading North, bring your car seat and a few cute tiny outfits...everything else can be picked up at a drug store if you need it.
Ann
I would go!! There are doctors everywhere (just know where an hospital is that you could deliver in with your insurance (you may want to even call them with the situation and have the tell you which hosptial to go to). Glad to hear you are feeling well, best of luck whatever you decided. Prayer will be on your side!
i know very little about pregnancy...but i do know a lot of about the hoffmann cousin getaway...therefore i think you should come. :)
we'll understand and miss ya if you don't. :)

Well, Ladies, Thank you for all the great advice! I didn't expect quite this much response so quickly! It really does help to get other people's opnions.
After much discussion with Matt and my sis-in-law (:D)...it looks like we are going to go ahead and go unless in the next day or two I start to feel weird or there is an increase in my BH contractions. I checked with my insurance and there is are numbers to call if I would go into labor out of state. I also checked and there is a hospital in MIchigan City that is covered under my insurance...so hopefully that should be fine. I really think that if I'm going to go into labor I will know the signs and be able to get home in time. I usually don't progress very quickly until the doctor breaks my water. I've always been slow until that point...never know how it will go though. So, I appreciate any prayers you guys make on my behalf! thanks again for your advice! I'm looking forward to going.
I should be okay to travel 3 hours...hay, a couple weeks ago I did a 13 hour drive to Virginia and did fine!
Thanks again girls!!

Hmm...so it looks like you've made up your mind, and since I've never been pregnant, I don't have any opinion except to say that you're my dear sister and that's my dear niece, so take care of both!
Love you and hope you have a great weekend!
Don't worry all - we're driving with Matt and Rebek... so I'm hear for you Rebekah if we need to deliver that baby on the way!! :) :) (this coming from the girl who almost passed out after Paige's little eye surgery) :) We'll pray, pray pray and then have TONS of fun a long the way! :)
LOVE YOU and glad you're coming! :)
Rebekah, I am disappointed you didn't await my expert medical opinion. I mean, my specialty is Anesthesiology and not OB, but I have participated in an actual labor and delivery. I have never been so terrified of dropping anything in my whole entire life, than the bloody, slippery, screaming newborn baby.
Anyways...my advice is GOOOOO definitely. The chances of delivering three weeks early (I believe you said 37 weeks right?) is only like 3-5%, even with braxton-hicks contractions. Plus you know, I believe they have hospitals and OB/GYNS in Michigan, so if you have an emergency you'll be all right.
btw...the hospital WILL accept your insurance. Hospitals will take any legitimate insurance trust me. As long as they get the money from someone, they'll be happy. They don't turn down patients with insurance, that never happens.
I guess Im late on this response....but I would have told you to GO:) Ive not yet had my regular ob doc deliver any of my kids and so who cares who delivers your child as long as they know what they are doing:) Take a risk, go have fun, and if the baby arrives early it will be a great story for you to post so we can all read about:) HAVE FUN!!!
Rebekah- according to your blog- you have 10 days 'til due date, but according to Aaron Plattner's blog- Aria Kay is 6 days old, so that means, she came a little over 2 weeks early, if all my math is correct. She is gorgeous!! and i love the name, and although i'm the 23rd comment on your post and you may not read it, may I be the first to congratulate you on your beautiful, hand-crafted-by-the-Designer, blessing!
p.s. I really enjoy your blog- is it okay if I put you on my blog list?
Hi Kaitlin! I'd be happy to be added to your blog list! Thanks for stopping by! I'm going to have to post some pictures of my own here when I get a chance!
