The Whoopie Cushion Debate

This week, my dear husband and I found out something new about eachother. Can you believe after nearly 7 years of marriage we're still finding out things about the other we never knew before?

It all started when I casually commented on the fact that I think it would be fun to get Josh a whoopie cushion. The look Matt gave me was one of complete Shock and Horror!

This was when we realized that we have completely different feelings about whoopie cushions. Not only do we have differing opinions, we have very STRONG opinions!

Matt's: As a little boy, he lived in fear of a boy named J.J. on the school bus. J.J. owned a whoopie cushion and found great delight in placing it under the little behinds of the kids as they were nervously finding their seats. When the unsuspecting little child would sit on the whoopie cushion, J.J. would laugh in gleeful hysterics. This has brought about in Matt very negative feelings towards the whoopie cushion.

Mine: As a little girl, my first experience with a whoopie cushion was sitting at the dinner table with my U. Erick and A. Cindy and hearing funny stories about my cousin Kory's little escapades with his whoopie cushion. I could only imagine how fun it would be to have my own. My mother, however, didn't share the same opinion and never let me get one. I remember thinking, "someday when I'm older, I'm going to get a whoopie cushion!" I also drempt of the day I was going to bestow the beloved whoopie cushion to my own children...but that dream is beginning to fade.....

So, as you can see, the feelings about this little item are strong! So, I thought I'd take a little poll here...

What are YOUR feelings about the WHOOPIE CUSHION?

Ummm...I think they have there place...like once in a blue moon at some party for someone...not a wedding reception...not on the school bus...not an everyday toy in my opinion. If you use them all the time, I think they loose the memory building power of an event joke anyway. The one time I saw one used as a joke it was kind of annoying and the kid doing it was laughing kind of annoying like the school bus memory...that could be coloring my opinion. =o)

I would have to say I side more with Matt...although probably not to quite the extreme; being a teacher, there seem to be enough embarrassing aspects about life without throwing in a whoopie cushion; however, when used appropriately, whoopie's can be great fun!

being that I have a husband who introduced them to my nieces and nephews (to their delight), I think I have to withdraw from this vote. We've had some great laughs as a family watching the kids delight in trying to "surprise" grandpa.

hmmm . . .on that note, maybe Jarod will just take care of this debate for the two of you! : )

But sincerely, I think within the safe confines of a family, it can be quite fun. On a school bus - definately not so much!

I suppose it could go without saying that I think whoopee cushions are awesome. I have never had a bad experiences.

All of you SQUARES who are too mature or girlie for whoopee cushions need to get a clue. Sometimes in life you are going to get made fun of or get laughed at. Have a good attitude. Trust me, I have been made fun of and had more pranks pulled on me than anyone you know. Guess what I have enjoyed and it has made me a better person.

Hmmm... So sorry Rebekah. I am going to agree with Matt. I think they are disgusting and not tasteful.

On the other hand, I think it would be fun for Josh to have at home to prank the family.

Love the question...these are fun!

I am all for them...and feel free to get Kory back for introducing you to the whoopie cushion when we see you in a couple of weeks! This morning he had a big grin on his face...I asked him what he was reading and it was your blog. He was so proud of himself. :)

I have to say I could go either way. I can see how if you have a bad natured kid that would like to be mean, it wouldn't be a smart idea, but in just playful fun...doesn't seem so bad. Maybe I should be the bad natured aunt and get the whoopie cushion for Josh.

i think they are hysterical. we've had a bit of fun with them once or twice. i think mainly with jaret's family, so no traumatized children were left in the wake. plus, if everyone realized it was a whoopie cushion in the end- so no harm done, and fun was had by all.

(i agree with the time and place observation as well. let's not be tacky, here!!) :)

i have to agree with Matt, I get embarrassed really easily and things like whoopie cusions just compound the effect. However, a little boy playing around with one at home can't do too much harm?!? Everyone needs a sense of humor - right!?!

I think a whoppie cushion is just fine if it is kept within the household and not taken outside of it to be used on others who you do not know. I have had many pulled on me and yes its embarrassing, but when you find out its a whoppie cushion its pretty funny. I completely forgot about these things and think I might just get one for my boys to use around the house ONLY. Cause you know boys...they will be boys and they will think its pretty funny.

I'm with Matt, all the way. There are less disgusting ways to have fun and a sense of humor! :-)

surprisingly enough, with three brothers, we never owned a whoopee cushion...so, I think they sound kind of fun ;)

Okay, let me explain! If I can!!! Kory bought that little contraption on his own, and Erik thought it was hilarious. I had my mixed emotions about the thing until the night that James and Gina Emch - newly weds - came over for dinner. Erik and James teased one another mercifullessly - and that night Kory placed that cushion on James' seat before we all sat down to dinner. When he sat down, Gina exclaimed, "James!!" and we all roared!!!! Our families have been very bonded all these years. There is definately a time and place to for these crazy things, and must be carefully considered on whom it is used. I think it needs to be an adult who is mature enough to see the humor, never a child, for they are all emotionally vulnerable and Never a female of any age!!! What we noticed, though, it that they are enjoyed by the owner for a short time and then forgotten about and they move on to some new contraption!!
