It's Begun...

Well, I began the dreaded job of potty training my daughter! I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing! The whole experience was such a nightmare with Josh that I don't feel like I have a clue what's supposed to work. So far, she's sat on the potty probably 10 times with nothing going in the potty. Then she wet her pants...But, she did know that she should run to the potty. So she got a small Smarty for that.

Anyway, for any of you who had positive potty training experiences, I'd love to hear your suggestions or ideas!

Hang in there, Rebekah. It sometimes takes a few days for them to understand what they are suppose to be doing. Best thing I can say is be constant, so she knows this is for real. Not just a-- well Mom will get tired of this and and I can quit.

Tell her how happy Grandma is that she is learning to go potty. You'll have to think about what Grandma can buy her for a reward.

praying for you and Darci, Grandma K.

well...everyone does this there own way pretty much. I like to make it as normal as possible and stick with it for sure-don't go back and forth. I'm not a huge fan of training pants (though they are convenient for sure) because they are so much like a diaper. I just took the boys about every hour or so and and I would use the bathroom with them there watching...you may not be comfortable with that, but it helped my boys see that everyone needed to use the potty and that it's not that big of a deal. =o) It also made it kind of fun and seemed to relax my kiddos. AVOID POWER STRUGGLES...keep it light hearted and every day like reading a book or taking a bath. =o) I always told my boys that we didn't want to spend money on diapers anymore too...so it made more sense. =o) I just said we wanted to use the money to buy other things like food and gas for the car. =o)

Best wishes!

Ann

Oi! Good luck. I am still in the midst of this with Jonah. Simon pretty much gets it. I don't think I can give any good advice because I would start and then stop and then start again and then stop again. :) One morning Simon just decided that he wanted to wear underwear and he's done great (for the most part) ever since. Jonah is still choosing to wear diapers and I don't really feel like making an issue of it. I figure when he's ready we will make the move to undies!

It sounds like you are off to a good start with introducing the whole process.

I hope it goes smoothly for you!

the only advice I have is to get her in girl underpants. Yes, you feel like you are wiping up a mess ever so often, but if you stick a timer to your shirt and set it for an hour (although i found out caden couldn't hold it that long and we went every 45 minutes) just keep taking them faithfully and have her wear big girl pants. You might not get to run errands for a few days, but hang in there...she will get it as all kids do:)

I generally just let my three kids wear diapers until they are around 7th or 8th grade. At this point they got mocked so severely by their friends that they generally would just potty train themselves.

I know this is bad, I should post anonymously, but oh well. M&M and trains is what we use to potty train James. It worked for both ends, he never wore a diaper again not even at night. A friend suggested to me- to buy a set of something that your child really likes and give them pieces as they go in the potty, it worked for James, since he could care less if his diaper was dirty or not. It took one week, but it worked.

We used an egg carton and put plastic easter eggs filled with treats in them. Each time he would go he would ask for an egg and we would give him one. It worked for him although he is struggling with #2 still. He seems so scared to go. He holds it in until night time or will ask us to put a diaper on him so he can go...seems so strange to me! But we are just going with it for now. But the eggs did it for us! :)

Hey thanks everyone for your encouragement and ideas! So far we've had two successful trips to the potty. So, I guess that is something to be happy about. I am still a little frustrated that she will just squat in the middle of a room and pee on the floor. But I think the Smartys and cookies are helping to motivate her a little more.

By the way, Jon, that is a good idea for potty training. :D That's actually pretty close to waht people were telling me about Josh when we were having a rough time with him!!
