February 3

A couple years ago, when Rika taught me how to make makisushi, she told me that it was a tradition in Japan on February 3rd to stand facing your house and silently eat an uncut roll of makisushi. It's to celebrate what was traditionally thought of as the first day of spring, which is also called Setsubun. I thought it was such a funny little tradition that would be fun to do. So, yesterday, I made a few rolls of sushi and we stood outside with the kids facing our home and each ate a roll. (I cut them in half for us and in thirds for the kids). It was fun to do something that is a Japanese tradition and I love it that all my kids loved the sushi!
